Allergens in falafel: ingredients, variations and how to order safely

By the Menulta editorial team · Facts checked 15 October 2026 · Updated 15 October 2026

The short answer

Falafel made only from chickpeas or broad beans, herbs and spices is naturally gluten-free, but many recipes and mixes add wheat flour or breadcrumbs as a binder. Falafel is usually fried in shared oil, often with breaded or battered items, and served with tahini sauce (sesame) and pitta (gluten). Some falafel is coated in sesame seeds.

What falafel is

Falafel are deep-fried balls or patties of ground chickpeas, broad beans or both, mixed with onion, garlic, parsley, coriander and spices. They are eaten in pitta with salad and tahini, in wraps or on mezze plates, and are a popular vegan option.

Variations that change the allergens

Egyptian ta'ameya uses broad beans. Bought-in falafel mixes vary; some contain wheat, soy or sesame. Baked falafel avoids fryer cross-contact.

Restaurant and bought-in versions

Ask whether falafel is made in-house or from a mix, whether flour is added and what else is fried in the same oil. Tahini sauce and yoghurt sauces bring sesame and milk.

Bought-in frozen falafel and falafel mixes are widely used by takeaways and cafés. Their labels may list wheat flour, soy or sesame, and may carry 'may contain' warnings for other allergens handled in the factory. Restaurants should keep the label on file and update the allergen record if the supplier changes.

Is falafel vegan?
Usually, but check sauces, which may contain yoghurt.
