Allergens in Caesar salad: ingredients, variations and how to order safely

By the Menulta editorial team · Facts checked 15 October 2026 · Updated 15 October 2026

The short answer

A classic Caesar salad contains fish (anchovies and often Worcestershire sauce in the dressing), egg (egg yolk in the dressing), milk (Parmesan), gluten (croutons) and often mustard (Dijon in the dressing). Chicken Caesar adds no extra Annex II allergens unless the chicken is breaded. Some bought-in Caesar dressings contain no anchovy but do contain egg, milk and mustard.

What Caesar salad is

Caesar salad is made with romaine lettuce, croutons, Parmesan and a creamy dressing of egg yolk, lemon, garlic, olive oil, anchovy and Worcestershire sauce, sometimes with Dijon mustard. Grilled chicken, bacon or prawns are popular additions.

Variations that change the allergens

Prawn Caesar adds crustaceans. Breaded chicken adds gluten and often egg and milk. Vegetarian Caesar may omit anchovies but keep egg, milk and mustard, and some 'vegetarian' versions still use Worcestershire sauce. Vegan Caesar dressings often use cashews, adding nuts.

Restaurant and bought-in versions

Most restaurants use a bought-in or batch-made dressing. Check whether it contains anchovy, egg and mustard. Croutons are often bought in and may contain sesame or milk.

Dressings are often made in large batches and used across several salads and sandwiches, so a Caesar dressing can turn up in wraps, burgers and side salads. Restaurants should record the dressing as its own component, so fish, egg and mustard are flagged everywhere it is used.

Caesar salad allergen by allergen

Can Caesar salad be adapted for each allergy?
AllergyWhat to know
FishAsk for no anchovies and a dressing without anchovy or Worcestershire sauce.
EggClassic dressing contains egg; ask for oil and lemon instead.
MilkLeave off Parmesan; check croutons and dressing.
Gluten / coeliacLeave off croutons; check the dressing and chicken.
MustardOften in the dressing.

Ordering it with an allergy

Ask what is in the dressing, whether croutons are fried in butter, and whether the chicken is breaded. Asking for the salad without dressing, croutons and cheese, with olive oil and lemon on the side, works for many allergies.
