Allergens in moussaka: ingredients, variations and how to order safely
By the Menulta editorial team · Facts checked 15 October 2026 · Updated 15 October 2026
The short answer
Greek moussaka usually contains milk (béchamel and cheese), gluten (flour in the béchamel and sometimes breadcrumbs), egg (yolks in the béchamel topping), and often celery and sulphites in the meat sauce (vegetable base and wine). Aubergines and potatoes are not EU allergens, but they may be fried in shared oil.
What moussaka is
Moussaka layers fried or roasted aubergine, sometimes potato, a spiced minced lamb or beef sauce with tomato, cinnamon and wine, and a thick béchamel topping enriched with egg yolks and cheese, baked until golden.
Traditional moussaka ingredients and their allergens
| Ingredient | Allergen | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Aubergine, potato | None | Often fried |
| Minced lamb or beef sauce | Celery possible | Vegetable base |
| Red wine | Sulphites | Common |
| Béchamel: butter, flour, milk | Milk, gluten | |
| Egg yolks in béchamel | Egg | |
| Kefalotyri or Parmesan | Milk | |
| Breadcrumbs (some recipes) | Gluten | Under the layers or on top |
Variations that change the allergens
Vegetarian moussaka replaces meat with lentils or vegetables. Gluten-free versions use cornflour in the béchamel. Some recipes use courgettes, and Balkan versions may differ in topping.
Restaurant and bought-in versions
Moussaka is baked in trays and portioned, so it cannot be adapted individually. Ask for allergen information, especially the béchamel and any breadcrumbs.
Some restaurants serve moussaka reheated from portions prepared earlier in the day, sometimes in a shared oven with other dishes. That does not change its allergens, but it means the dish cannot be adapted on request. If you need a milk-, egg- or gluten-free meal in a Greek restaurant, ask which dishes are cooked to order, such as grilled fish, souvlaki or a salad without feta.
Moussaka allergen by allergen
| Allergy | What to know |
|---|---|
| Milk | Not suitable. |
| Egg | Not suitable. |
| Gluten / coeliac | Only if made with a gluten-free béchamel and no breadcrumbs. |
| Celery | Possible in the meat sauce. |
| Sulphites | Present if wine is used. |
Ordering it with an allergy
Moussaka is not suitable for milk or egg allergies. For gluten, ask whether the béchamel uses wheat flour and whether breadcrumbs are used. Grilled meats with salad are often easier to adapt in Greek restaurants.
